(Un)doing regimentation in reflexive practices: on-site processes of sociolinguistic differentiation – a commentary

Abstract This article discusses Volume 42(6) where the editors (Gilles Merminod and Raymund Vitorio) push for a metapragmatic approach to reflexive practices of sociolinguistic differentiation. With reference my own trajectory, I review this lens as suitable accounting how people affectively take part in making difference similarities between signs, social situations positions daily meaning-making larger inequalities that these may contribute sustain interrogate. In doing so, focus on story-telling templates professional communication, citizenship narratives research interviews, English-oriented forms self-evaluation workplace ritualised instances self-presentation interaction evaluations others’ networking events indexical signs articulate range moralised meanings categories “ideal” versus “non-ideal” persona upon which arrangements life work get (re)instituted. also discuss socioeconomic hierarchies distinction such (re)produce different settings. Finally, suggest further epistemological avenues exploring linkages across following more closely consequences have certain people, with attention existing disciplinary synergies (and theories) within beyond language disciplines.
